BELAWAI: Prompt and comprehensive checks on school electrical wiring systems are crucial to maintaining a safe learning environment.

Tanjong Manis Member of Parliament, Datuk Yusuf Abd Wahab, stressed that safety must not be taken lightly as it involves the lives of students and school staff.

“Regular inspections of wiring systems, electrical facilities and school building structures must be prioritised, especially in old and dilapidated schools,” he said when met after the prize-giving ceremony of the Belawai Beach Fishing Competition 2026, held at Belawai Beach here today (May 10).

He was commenting on a recent incident in Daro where a student was believed to have suffered an electric shock while performing ablution.

According to Yusuf, the incident should serve as a serious reminder to all parties, including agencies and those responsible for maintaining school infrastructure, to strengthen preventive measures.

He also expressed sadness over the incident and hoped that comprehensive inspections would be carried out immediately on schools identified as being in poor condition.

He added that many schools, particularly in the Tanjong Manis parliamentary constituency, still require urgent upgrades to provide a safer and more conducive learning environment.

He also said that continuous commitment from the government and relevant ministries is crucial to ensure school facilities remain in good and safe condition.

At the same time, he assured that he would continue to play his role in ensuring school infrastructure safety issues receive due attention, including raising the matter in the upcoming Parliament sitting for the benefit of students, especially in rural and remote areas.
