BINTULU: Schools should not only prioritise academic achievement but also nurture values such as respect, kindness, and unity to prevent bullying and violence among students.
Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming said that beyond academic excellence, schools play a vital role in shaping students’ character and fostering positive behaviour.
“Schools should cultivate respect, kindness, and unity as part of their culture. When these values take root, they can prevent bullying and violence at their source,” he said during a visit to SMK Bintulu on Wednesday (Oct 22).
Pang said creating a safe and nurturing environment requires collective effort from schools, parents, and the wider community.
“Schools must remain safe, enjoyable spaces where teachers can teach in peace and students can learn with joy,” he added.
Pang said student safety is a shared responsibility, with school liaison officers playing a crucial role in maintaining security on school grounds.

He also urged the police to increase patrols and monitoring in and around school areas to deter bullying and misconduct.
“Their regular presence not only improves safety but also serves as a deterrent against negative behaviour,” he said.
Pang highlighted the need for education and awareness programmes to help students understand the impact of bullying and foster empathy among their peers.
He reminded the public that ensuring school safety cannot rest solely on teachers or law enforcement.
“It requires collective commitment from parents, educators, and the wider community.
“Only through strong cooperation can we effectively prevent youth-related crime and build a culture of care and mutual respect,” he added.
Accompanied by Bintulu district education officer Samri Suhaili and Inspector Mohd Fazar Dullah from the Bintulu Crime Prevention and Community Safety Unit, the visit also included an inspection of ongoing facility improvements at the school.
The visit reflected continued collaboration between local authorities, law enforcement, and educational institutions in Bintulu to strengthen school safety and student well-being.
