THE rebranding and renaming of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) is not merely cosmetic but strategic reform to reposition it for a globally competitive, investment-driven economy.

Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang said institutions must evolve in line with changing economic realities, making the amendment timely, necessary and strategic.

“One of the most important aspects of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) (Amendment) Bill 2026 is the rebranding and renaming of the Corporation from Perbadanan Pembangunan Ekonomi Sarawak to Sarawak Economic Development Corporation.

“Names matter. It carries institutional identity and reflects institutional confidence. It shaped international perception.

“Branding matters, especially when Sarawak is aggressively competing for international investments, strategic partnerships and global economic visibility,” he said when debating the Bill during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today (May 12).

He added that the amendment also modernises the governance structure of the corporation, recognising that economic development is no longer confined to a single sector.

“This amendment recognises that reality and importantly, it institutionalises expertise.

“This new composition creates a more holistic governance ecosystem within the Corporation. At the same time, I also welcome the inclusion of professionals and individuals with specialised expertise,” he added.

He also stressed that economic development is increasingly knowledge-driven, adding that reliance on traditional bureaucratic structures alone is no longer sufficient for global competitiveness.

However, he expressed hope that appointments and selections under the new framework would be carried out in a fair, inclusive, transparent and merit-based manner.
