Sept 15 declared as additional public holiday for Malaysia Day

KUCHING: The Sarawak Government has declared Monday, September 15, as a public holiday in conjunction with Malaysia Day celebration.

In a Facebook post, the Sarawak Labour Department (JTK Sarawak) said the decision, issued in the Sarawak Government Gazette today, was made under Section 5 of the Public Holidays Ordinance (Sarawak Cap. 8).

The date will be observed in addition to the public holidays already listed under the First Schedule of the said Ordinance.

Accordingly, employees covered under the Labour Ordinance (Sarawak Cap. 76) are entitled to a holiday on 15 September 2025, in accordance with paragraph 104(1)(b) of the same Ordinance.

However, employers may designate any other day as a substitute holiday for this additional public holiday.

If this public holiday falls on the employee’s rest day, the following working day shall be observed as the substitute holiday.

Employees who are required to work on this public holiday must be paid holiday wages in accordance with subsections 104(6), (7), (8) and (9) of the said Ordinance.
