KUCHING: A 24-year-old man was fined RM3,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here today (May 7) for possessing methamphetamine earlier this year.
Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali imposed the fine on Francis Stephen, with seven months’ imprisonment in default if he fails to pay the fine.
The accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty to an amended charge under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act.
According to the facts of the case, the offence took place on February 20 at about 1:30 am at a house in Kampung Siga, Siburan, Padawan.
A police team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) of Padawan District Police Headquarters, detained the accused on suspicion of involvement in drug-related activities.
A subsequent inspection by D/Kpl Ron Maide uncovered a small blue transparent plastic packet containing crystalline substances suspected to be syabu inside a black sling bag branded ‘Cordura Fabric’ carried by the accused.
Police also found the accused’s identity card in the same bag. The accused admitted ownership of the suspected drugs.
Investigations later confirmed the substance to be methamphetamine weighing 0.10 gramme following laboratory analysis conducted by the Chemistry Department Malaysia.
