KUCHING: The Siol International Mountain Bike Challenge (SIMBC) 2025 is set to take place from August 21 to 24 at Bukit Siol, drawing global attention as one of Sarawak’s major sporting and tourism events.
The competition is hosted by Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and will mark a decade since the event gained international status.
Speaking at the press conference, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, emphasised that SIMBC is not only a sporting event but also a platform to promote Sarawak’s natural beauty, talent, and community spirit.
“This event is more than just a race.
“It reflects the adventurous character of Sarawak and showcases how our natural terrain can support world-class sports activities,” he said at the press conference held at the Baitulmakmur II Building yesterday (May 13).
He added that it is rare to find a mountain biking venue like Bukit Siol, located in the heart of the city, making it easily accessible to the public.
“This event allows us to showcase Sarawak’s stunning landscape and rich heritage right in the heart of the city, making it a powerful platform to promote the state globally,” he said.
He pointed out that mountain biking is typically held in remote forests, but Siol Mountain’s central location allows for greater community involvement and exposure.
“This is not just about cycling. It brings economic benefits too — hotels, transportation, retail, even small local vendors will all feel the impact,” he added.
More than 300 riders from across Asia and beyond are expected to compete in various categories, including Cross Country Olympic (XCO), Downhill Individual (DHI), Cross Country Short Course (XCC), Cross Country Eliminator (XCE), and Team Relay (XCR).
As a side event, the Siol Trail Run will also take place on August 23.
DBKU Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman also delivered a speech, thanking all involved, particularly the Ministry of Tourism and international cycling bodies, for their continued support.
“SIMBC has grown into a recognised international event, and we are proud to host it here in Kuching.
“With each edition, we aim to improve not just the course and the competition, but also the overall experience for riders and spectators,” he said.
