KUCHING: The 11th edition of the Siol International Mountain Bike Challenge (SIMBC) this August is expected to elevate Sarawak’s sporting profile on the global stage.

The event, scheduled for Aug 21-23, will see Kuching host the final leg of the prestigious Asia Continental Series.

As the final leg of the series, the event will significantly influence regional rankings and qualification for the 2027 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.

With a prize pool of RM112,000, SIMBC 2026 is among the region’s most competitive cycling events, attracting top-tier athletes.

Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the inclusion in the UCI Asia Continental Series highlights Sarawak’s growing reputation as a trusted international sports host.

“This recognition strengthens our position on the global sporting stage and reflects our capability to organise world-class competitions,” he said.

He said this during the press conference on the Siol International Mountain Bike Challenge 2026 here today.

Approximately 250 riders from across the region, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei, and Singapore, are expected to participate in the event.

The competition will take place at the Siol Mountain Bike Track, featuring diverse categories for elite, junior, and youth cyclists.

Notably, SIMBC 2026 remains the only series event to feature the Downhill category, making it one of the most anticipated highlights.

Abdul Karim emphasised that the championship serves as a vital platform for athlete development, offering exposure, ranking points, and competitive opportunities.

“It is not just a race, but a pathway for athletes to improve performance and gain international recognition,” he added.

The event also plays a crucial role in strengthening grassroots development through newly introduced youth and national-level competition categories.

Beyond sports, the championship is expected to deliver economic benefits by boosting tourism, hospitality services, and small businesses within the local community.

“It will showcase Sarawak’s natural beauty and eco-tourism potential while contributing to economic growth across multiple sectors,” he said.

SIMBC 2026 will also promote healthy lifestyles and community engagement, encouraging youth participation and volunteer involvement throughout the events.
