KUCHING: A 41-year-old unemployed man was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here yesterday (June 15) after pleading guilty to possessing methamphetamine earlier this year.

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali handed down the sentence to Sammy Abdullah, who was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act.

The offence carries a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both upon conviction.

Sammy was charged with possessing 0.06 grammes of methamphetamine in an area near Batu 5, Jalan Matang-Batu Kawa, in the Padawan district at 3.45 pm on March 31.

According to the facts of the case, a police team from the Padawan District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) was conducting a special anti-drug operation when they detained Sammy on suspicion of involvement in drug-related activities.

A body search did not uncover any prohibited items. However, further inspection of the area where he was detained led police to discover a white-and-blue plastic container.

Inside the container was a small transparent plastic packet containing crystal-like substances suspected to be syabu.

The seized substance, initially weighing 0.20 grammes, was sent to the Chemistry Department Malaysia’s Kuching branch for analysis on April 2.

A laboratory report dated May 22 confirmed that the substance contained methamphetamine with a net weight of 0.06 grammes.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Aidil Akmal Shahridan. Sammy was unrepresented.
