MIRI: Six workers’ quarters at Ladang Niamas 2, Ulu Niah, were destroyed in a fire this morning, leaving one person slightly injured.

The Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station said it received a distress call at 9:49 am and deployed a team of six firefighters led by PBK I Jeffery Majin.

They arrived at the site at 10:34 am, some 44 kilometres away.

Upon arrival, the team found six semi-permanent houses measuring 30 by 100 feet fully engulfed in flames.

The fire was believed to have started from the kitchen of one of the units.

Twelve residents managed to escape, while one suffered minor injuries and was treated at Batu Niah Clinic.

Workers at the plantation had tried to extinguish the fire using 13 fire extinguishers and 10 buckets of sand before firefighters arrived.

The blaze was brought under control shortly after 11:00 am and the operation ended at 11:59 am.

The team was assisted by two auxiliary police officers and ten plantation workers.

The cause of the fire and total losses are being investigated.
