SIBU: A total of 123 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2025 high achievers from SMK Methodist here have received education excellence incentives from Bukit Assek assemblyman, Joseph Chieng.

The presentation ceremony which took place at the school hall today, was for those students who achieved 5A and above in their SPM examination.

Speaking at the ceremony, he said the total amount given out stood at RM44,100, stressing that the incentive is not merely a financial reward, but a symbol of recognition, encouragement and belief in their future potential.

He said since he was elected assemblyman at the end of 2021, this was the fourth consecutive year that he has presented academic excellence incentives from four secondary schools in his constituency, including SMK Sacred Heart, SMK Bukit Assek and Catholic High School for their achievements in SPM, Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) examinations.

“Dear students, your achievements today did not come easily. Behind your success are countless hours of hard work, the dedication of your teachers, and the unwavering support and sacrifices of your parents.

“To all teachers and parents, I extend my deepest appreciation and respect.”

Meanwhile, Chieng also shared that beginning this year, the Sarawak government under the leadership of Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, is implementing free tertiary education in four universities, namely, Curtin University Malaysia, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, University Technology of Sarawak (UTS) and i-CATS University College.

This, he said, includes full tuition coverage for key fields such as medicine, law, STEM, etc.

He stressed that this landmark policy reflects the government’s commitment to investing in the youth and ensuring equal access to higher education.

He encouraged the students to seize this opportunity, pursue their dreams and strive for greater heights.
