SIBU: OCT X ETK from SMK Methodist emerged as the champion of the Inter-School Mobile Legends Bang Bang Esports Tournament 2026 held at Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI) here recently.

Securing second place was NOVA from SMK Sacred Heart while SMKD The Art of War from SMK Durin and BT from SMK Methodist finished third and fourth respectively.

Matthew Kira from SMK Methodist was also awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) title.

The one-day tournament was organised by Pelawan Premier League and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED), and co-organised by MPI and Sibu Division Esports Association (SDESA).

SDESA president Abdul Taib Rosli presented the trophies to the respective winners, witnessed by MPI’s Board of Governor chairperson Ling Ching Rou.

According to MPI head of Department of Computer Science, Ngang Tuong Kiet, the tournament was successfully organised with a total of 80 players representing 16 teams from 10 secondary schools across Sibu.

The participating schools include SMK Methodist, SMK Sacred Heart, SMK Chung Hua, SMK Agama Sibu, SM Citizen, SM Kiang Hin, SMK Durin, Woodlands International School, SM Guong Ming, and SM Wong Nai Siong.

“Schools are quite supportive of the tournament; there are some schools that asked if they could send more students to join. As we only limit it to 16 teams, we need to make sure that more schools are able to join the tournament.”

He added that the aim of the tournament is not only to find local talents but also to allow the students to learn about team spirit, teamwork, analytical skills, gameplay skills, exploration and communication skills.

He also hoped that the students could learn networking and become Esports Marshals (officials, referees or moderators).

As he believed that there are more local talents to be explored in Sibu, he hoped that SDESA and Sarawak Esports Association (SESA) could send more trainers to Sibu and train these athletes so that they can participate in more tournaments outside of Sibu or maybe Sarawak.

“Opportunities in Sibu may be limited, so developing our local talents into professional players requires the support from SDESA and SESA through more structured coaching programmes. We already have champions here, and they have the potential to achieve even greater success.

“I really hope that the association can come up with training programmes and train them and give them more tournament opportunities.”
