SIBU: Bawang Assan assemblyman, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, continued his site inspections today (May 8) by visiting Sungai Maaw and Jalan Lim Tze Ming at the West Bank here to monitor the progress of the solar streetlight installation project.
The project aims to enhance road safety in the rural areas of the West Bank.
Wong stressed that his team had carefully assessed several strategic junctions throughout the West Bank area to ensure lighting facilities are installed at these critical locations, significantly improving night-time visibility and safeguarding the safety of local residents.
Many junctions in the West Bank area lacked sufficient lighting, causing inconvenience and posing safety risks to residents travelling at night.
“Our objective is very clear – to install solar lights at all key strategic junctions. This environmentally friendly and efficient lighting solution will directly illuminate every rural road, allowing residents to return home safely after a long day,” said Wong.
During the inspection, he also expressed serious concern over the increasing number of public facility theft cases occurring in various areas.
In this regard, he issued a stern warning calling on thieves to stop targeting solar streetlights.
He urged irresponsible individuals not to steal these solar lights for personal gain, stressing that such acts of vandalism are not only illegal but also endanger the safety of the community.
“I call upon all residents to step forward and play the role of ‘guardians of public facilities’. If you notice any suspicious individuals loitering near the streetlights or engaging in acts of vandalism, please report the matter to the police immediately,” he added.
Wong reiterated that improving infrastructure within the constituency remains his responsibility, but maintaining these facilities requires the cooperation of the entire community.
“These lights belong to the people. They are meant to illuminate the road home and provide hope and safety for everyone. I hope this will not only serve as a source of physical light but also reflect the spirit of community unity. Let us work together to ensure that these ‘lights of safety’ never go out,” he said.
