KUCHING: Song City Clinic officially had its grand opening today (May 8) in a ceremony held at Song Plaza, drawing community leaders, medical professionals, family members, and well-wishers.

The clinic is led by Dr Michele Chai, and its establishment represents a meaningful step forward for primary healthcare access within the Kuching South City Hall (MBKS) community.

Officiating the opening was MBKS Mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng, who delivered a keynote address underscoring the deep connection between healthcare and a city’s overall progress.

“This is not just the opening of a clinic – it symbolises our community’s medical system taking one step ahead, to provide more convenient medical services to the people,” he said.

He reflected on the lessons of the pandemic, reminding attendees that a city’s true advancement is not measured by taller buildings or wider roads, but by whether its people have access to quality medical care and public health services.

He highlighted Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare across hospitals, specialist services, rural coverage, and medical technology.

Wee listens to explanations from Dr Michele Chai and Dr Ronan Chai on the products at their clinic.

“Only those who truly understand Sarawak can make the most suitable medical policies for Sarawak’s people. We are not asking for special treatment – we want decisions that are closer to our actual needs,” he added.

Wee also touched on Sarawak’s push for greater healthcare autonomy, particularly in medical planning, human resource training, and retaining local medical talent – emphasising that this is a pragmatic direction, not a confrontation with the federal government.

Turning to Song City Clinic’s role in the community, he expressed hope that the clinic would grow beyond being a treatment centre, becoming a true community health partner through preventive medicine, health awareness, and long-term health management initiatives.

“I hope the clinic will actively participate in community activities – health talks, free check-ups, care for the elderly – so that our medical services are not only professional, but also humane,” he said.
