MIRI: The SPANS Bario Highlands Outreach 2026 programme further strengthens the Sarawak government’s efforts to broaden access to career opportunities and public services in an inclusive manner, including for communities in rural and interior areas.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala said the initiative implemented by the Sarawak Public Service Commission (SPANS) serves as a strategic approach to bridge the information gap and ensure that rural communities are not left behind in the development process.
“This programme provides direct access for local residents to obtain information related to career opportunities in the public service as well as exposure to various development initiatives provided by the government,” he said at the launch of the programme in Bario.
He stressed that on-the-ground engagement in rural areas like Bario enables more effective and comprehensive information delivery.
At the same time, he noted that Bario possesses its own uniqueness in terms of natural beauty and cultural richness, making it an important asset that should be strengthened in line with human capital development.
Accordingly, he called on the youth to fully utilise the available opportunities including recruitment into the public service through SPANS, educational scholarships provided by Yayasan Sarawak and technical skills training at the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS).
Gerawat, who is also the Mulu assemblyman, said that the government provides a comprehensive platform but success ultimately depends on the effort, discipline and determination of individuals in seizing the opportunities provided.
He reaffirmed the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to expanding access to education, improving employability and strengthening rural and interior development including in Bario.
The programme brings together a range of relevant agencies to offer the locals direct exposure to opportunities in careers, education and skills training.
