KOTA SAMARAHAN: More than just a festive gathering, the Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House hosted by Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development and Kota Samarahan MP Datuk Rubiah Wang became a powerful catalyst for community empowerment — showcasing the strength of unity, tradition, and shared purpose in this area.

Held at Kota Samarahan Civic Centre, the event drew over 5,000 guests from all walks of life, united in celebrating the values of togetherness and mutual respect.

In the true spirit of ‘gotong-royong’ (communal work), a key part of Malaysian culture, traditional Hari Raya dishes were prepared together by agencies under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development — including KEMAS, MARA, RISDA, and FELCRA. This teamwork between government bodies and the local community made the celebration both meaningful and flavourful.

The event was further graced by the presence of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, along with Deputy Premiers, ministers, and state assembly members — reflecting strong leadership support for grassroots initiatives.

One of the evening’s highlights was the prize-giving ceremony for the ‘bertuntung’ (lighting up oil lamps as a decoration) competition, held in conjunction with the Ramadan and Aidilfitri celebrations. Villages across the district lit up with creative displays inspired by Islamic values and local heritage.

Kampung Tanjung Bundong took the top prize of RM5,000 for its outstanding effort, followed by Kampung Mang and Kampung Stakan Melayu in second and third places, winning RM3,000 and RM2,000 respectively.

Rubiah lauded the initiative for going beyond decoration — helping to strengthen community ties and nurture a shared identity.

“Each time we gather like this, we strengthen the bond between residents, leaders, and government agencies. This is the true essence of Hari Raya,” she said.

The event’s success was the result of a joint effort by GIATMARA, PKN Sarawak, the Samarahan Resident and District Offices, and the Samarahan Branch of PERKIM — all of whom played vital roles in its planning and execution.

In a time of growing social and economic challenges, the celebration stood as a heartfelt reminder: shared traditions and community spirit remain powerful forces for resilience and progress.
