KUCHING: Federal Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has highlighted an effort to promote St. Peter’s Church Padungan here as a tourism attraction under the Visit Malaysia (VM) 2026.
He said this during his official visit with his officials from the ministry to the church yesterday afternoon where they were formally received by the church’s Rector Father Vincent Chin.
During the visit, Tiong expressed interest in promoting St. Peter’s Church Padungan as one of the tourism attractions in conjunction with VM 2026, recognising the church’s cultural, historical and spiritual significance within the community.
In a Facebook post, the church said it was honoured by the visit and welcomed the recognition given to the parish.
“The church community is honoured by the visit and looks forward to welcoming visitors from near and far to experience the heritage, faith, and hospitality of St. Peter’s Church Padungan,” the post stated.
St. Peter’s Church Padungan was officially opened in June last year, standing as a prominent house of worship that reflects Sarawak’s heritage, unity, and homegrown craftsmanship. The church is recognised as a landmark in Kuching that combines spiritual purpose with significant architectural value.
The church was designed as a “house of God built with love, faith and purpose,” guided by the principle of anchoring tradition while embracing change.
Its architectural direction was influenced by the adoption of a Neo-Gothic style, chosen to root the building in timeless ecclesiastical tradition.
