KUCHING: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has provided stability for the past eight years, and this stability must be maintained to achieve Sarawak’s 2030 aspirations.

GPS Chairman, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, said Sarawak must remain steady despite uncertainties faced elsewhere, stressing that unity and trust are the foundation of the state’s continued progress.

“Other states may face instability, but Sarawak must not be shaken. We must have stability so we can achieve our vision for 2030,” he said at the GPS Convention 2026 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.

The Premier also highlighted the importance of trust within GPS, noting that the coalition’s strength lies in the unity of its four component parties.

He acknowledged that there are parties who may not wish to see Sarawak progress, warning that division could weaken the state if trust is broken.

“Trust is very important because without it, even the strongest party can fall. It is easy to divide us if trust is lost.

“But Sarawak has remained united until today, and that unity must be preserved,” he stressed.

Abang Johari pointed out that Sarawak’s economic performance and development trajectory have been recognised at the national level, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim acknowledging the state’s leading position in Malaysia.

However, he said the journey has not been easy, recalling the challenges following the 2018 General Election when Barisan Nasional (BN) lost power at the federal level.

“Although we won in Sarawak, many questioned how we would survive as the opposition, but we stood firm and were not afraid,” he said.

This led to the formation of GPS in 2018, which Abang Johari described as a decisive step to safeguard Sarawak’s rights and future.

“We formed our own coalition to defend our rights, develop Sarawak and fight for our future. As the late Tok Nan (Pehin Sri Adenan Satem) said, only Sarawakians can take care of Sarawak,” he said.

Abang Johari also expressed appreciation to party leaders and members, saying the state’s achievements are the result of collective effort.

“The success we see today is not the work of one individual, but the result of cooperation among leaders and the rakyat,” he said.
