KUCHING: The Sarawak government continues to support women entrepreneurs venturing into business, particularly in providing start-up capital.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said he understands that one of the main challenges faced by these entrepreneurs, many of whom are single mothers and widows, is access to initial funding.

“This is where the government plays its role by providing start-up capital, and we have been implementing this together with the Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

“I channel allocations to her ministry, and through the ministry, assistance is given to single mothers and widows who possess certain skills.

“As a result, many have succeeded, and when more funds are requested, we increase the allocation. Some have opened salons, others are producing handicrafts, and they are doing very well,” he said during a dialogue session at the Leadership Soiree Dinner (Sarawak Woman of Tomorrow 2025) held here on Tuesday (Nov 25).

However, the Premier stressed that women entrepreneurs must continue to enhance the skills that form the foundation of self-development, including the inner drive needed to achieve success in business.

He also highlighted the importance of time management for women, especially in balancing family and career responsibilities.

He noted that fields once considered male-dominated are now seeing increasing participation from women, as the majority are university graduates, including in engineering.

“To me, it depends on the capabilities and capacity of the individual, and if they are qualified, why not?

“They can hold those positions, which is why managing time between family and career is very important for women,” he added.
