KUCHING: The Sarawak Government continues its commitment to strengthening multi-stream education development through the allocation of a RM10 million grant to Independent Chinese Secondary Schools (ICSS) in the state.
The allocation was presented by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during a courtesy visit by the delegation of the United Association of Independent Chinese Secondary School Management Boards of Sarawak at Satria Pertiwi Complex today (June 15).
The delegation was led by its chairman Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau Lee Ming, deputy chairman Datuk Seri Richard Wee Liang Chiat, treasurer Datuk Seru Song Tiing Seng and assistant secretary-general Kuang Wei Hua.
The initiative reflects the Sarawak Government’s inclusive policy, which consistently recognises the role of all education streams in developing quality human capital and contributing to the state and national development.
Since 2014, the state government has continuously provided annual assistance to these schools, with total funding reaching RM102 million over a 13-year period.
The increase in allocation from RM3 million to RM10 million annually has also helped ease the financial burden of school managements while ensuring the continued development of these educational institutions.
During the meeting, the association expressed appreciation for the state government’s continuous support, which they said has been a catalyst for academic excellence and the production of competitive graduates.
They also noted that the support aligns with Sarawak’s approach of prioritising educational equity across all streams, including through the implementation of the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), which benefits thousands of students.
As of the first quarter of 2026, a total of 4,694 students have benefited from the scheme, including 94 holders of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) from independent Chinese secondary schools who received full tuition sponsorship.
