BINTULU: Sarawak’s Special Olympics (SO) contingent made history when it emerged overall champion at the 6th Special Olympics Malaysia 2026 here.
Sarawak was not only named Best Team, but also collected a total of 56 gold, 68 silver and 52 bronze medals, following consistent performances throughout the games held here from April 24 to 26.
The success was further strengthened by the host contingent’s dominance in nearly all events, winning seven out of eight categories namely athletics, swimming, bocce, table tennis, bowling, badminton and basketball, while only football was won by SO Kedah.
Women, Childhood and Community Well-being Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, said the achievement reflects not only the excellence of the athletes, but also reinforces the message that persons with disabilities (PWDs), particularly those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), can reach high performance levels when given equal opportunities.
She stressed that PWD development must be grounded in equality, fairness and inclusivity, not merely symbolic efforts, by ensuring access to education, healthcare, sports and community support so that no one is left behind.
