MIRI: Sarawak is advancing plans to develop the Adong area as a potential gas production hub to strengthen its energy sector.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said early indications point to significant gas reserves in Adong, prompting the state to move decisively in expanding its role within the industry.
“Today we are developing the Adong area where there are signs of a lot of gas,” he said during the Sarawakku Sayang programme here, underscoring the strategic importance of the site to Sarawak’s long-term energy ambitions.
He stressed that Sarawak must establish a stronger presence in the gas sector, particularly in distribution, as part of efforts to maximise the value of its natural resources.
While acknowledging existing challenges, he called for public understanding and support.
“Gas distribution is implemented in Sarawak. Although there are problems, pray because our intentions are good—we want to boost the Malaysian economy,” he said.
The Premier highlighted that Sarawak’s energy resources place it in a strong position to contribute meaningfully to national development.
He added that the state government intends to develop the gas sector within existing legal frameworks to ensure sustainable growth of the gas industry.
“Sarawak has energy resources and we will develop this gas sector under the state’s existing laws,” he said, pointing to the importance of balancing development aspirations with regulatory compliance.
At the same time, Abang Johari emphasised that safeguarding Sarawak’s rights remains a key priority.
He noted that navigating legal parameters will be essential as the state seeks to expand its role in upstream and downstream activities.
“It’s not easy, but we have to look at the legal parameters on our right, and GPS will fight for our right,” he said, referring to Gabungan Parti Sarawak.
He added that the development of the gas sector aligns with the state’s broader vision under the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which aims to transform Sarawak into a high-income and sustainable economy.
The proposed development of Adong is expected to further strengthen Sarawak’s position as a key energy player, while contributing to both state and national economic growth.
