KUCHING: The launch of the Sarawak Halal Industry Development Plan 2026-2030 marked a significant milestone in the state’s ambition to become a leading halal hub in ASEAN, as the Borneo International Halal Showcase (BIHAS) 2026 concluded with renewed commitments to strengthen the global halal industry ecosystem.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Hall and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, said the strategic roadmap would drive the development of a competitive, innovative and internationally connected halal ecosystem in Sarawak.
He said BIHAS had successfully brought together government leaders, industry players, academics and business communities from Malaysia and abroad to exchange ideas, explore opportunities and forge strategic partnerships that would have a lasting impact on the halal industry.
“Through the World Halal Excellence Awards 2025 Borneo, we recognise individuals and organisations that have demonstrated excellence, innovation and leadership in advancing the halal industry,” he said.
He said this when delivering his speech at the Gala Dinner and World Halal Excellence Awards 2025 Borneo held in conjunction with the closing of BIHAS 2026 here on Wednesday (July 22).
Dr Abdul Rahman said this year’s BIHAS was particularly meaningful as it coincided with the Sarawak Day celebration, commemorating the restoration of Sarawak’s self-governance in 1963.
He noted that the halal industry has evolved beyond the food sector and now encompasses pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, logistics, finance, tourism and digital technology, creating vast opportunities for economic growth and innovation.
According to him, Sarawak’s political stability, abundant natural resources, renewable energy, modern infrastructure and business-friendly environment provide a strong foundation for the state to emerge as a premier halal destination in ASEAN.
The gala dinner also witnessed the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), expected to strengthen strategic collaboration, expand market access and unlock new investment opportunities.
Another key highlight was the launch of the Sarawak Halalpreneur Association, aimed at empowering local halal entrepreneurs to scale up their businesses and compete in regional and global markets.
