KUCHING: A small store caught fire in Kampung Demak Baru Phase 1 here on Friday evening, but swift action by nearby residents prevented the blaze from spreading.

The fire affected the 10-by-10-foot store, which is used to keep books and used equipment.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said its Petra Jaya station received an emergency call at 7:43 pm and immediately dispatched a team of nine personnel to the scene, approximately 7 kilometres (km) away from the station.

“The team arrived at 7:51 pm to find that the fire, which had affected about five per cent of the house, had already been extinguished by the public.

“No firefighting operation was conducted as the flames were already put out before the team’s arrival,” it said in a statement.

Fire personnel had also conducted an inspection and monitoring of the scene to ensure no remaining sources of ignition.

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.
