MIRI: The enduring story of a stray dog affectionately known as Tompok has continued to capture hearts, drawing animal lovers from Malaysia and abroad to Miri to mark the first anniversary of its passing.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the commemorative gathering carried a powerful message of compassion, kindness and the unique bond between humans and animals.
“Tompok’s story has grown into a phenomenon that transcends national borders. It has touched the hearts of people regardless of race, religion or nationality,” he said when attending the anniversary event at Tukau Beach, here, yesterday (Jul 26).
He said Tompok’s story demonstrated that tourism was not solely about iconic landmarks or major attractions, but also about meaningful human stories capable of forging emotional connections.
“It is not just about tall buildings or tourism destinations. It is a simple story that has touched countless lives and united people through compassion,” he said.
According to Ting, thousands of visitors from various countries have travelled to Miri over the past year to learn about Tompok, whose story went viral and has since become a symbol of kindness towards animals.
He also commended the local community for preserving Tompok’s legacy, noting that their efforts had attracted visitors from Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei and Peninsular Malaysia.
As a gesture of support, Ting announced a contribution of RM1,000, adding to the RM2,000 pledged earlier by Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, bringing the total contribution to RM3,000.
He also reminded the public to cherish their loved ones and spend quality time with family and friends, emphasising that every moment is precious.
“I warmly welcome visitors from Malaysia and overseas to Miri, and I hope Tompok’s story will continue to serve as a symbol of compassion, unity and the shared humanity that connects people across the world,” he said.
