DATUK Snowdan Lawan is no stranger to the demands of public service, balancing a packed daily schedule as a Deputy Minister and Balai Ringin assemblyman.

But beyond politics, music has remained one of his greatest passions. Often seen with a guitar in hand, he turns to music to unwind, recharge and bring balance to his life.

In an interview with Sarawak Tribune, Snowdan opens up about his love for music, the instruments he plays, and the hobbies that keep him active outside his official duties.

Tribune: Many people see you performing or sharing music on social media. What does music actually mean to you?

Snowdan: Music is an essential part of life. While some people turn to golf or badminton for recreation, I turn to music to release tension. With a hectic schedule as a people’s representative and the responsibilities of managing a Ministry, life can get heavy. Music adds colour to my day and ensures things don’t become monotonous. It’s my way of recharging.

Tribune: When it comes to genres, what so you usually listen to?

Snowdan: I have a pretty diverse playlist! I enjoy everything from rock and hip-hop to ballads, and yes, even dangdut.

Tribune: We know you’re a talented musician, but do you enjoy being behind the microphone as well?

Snowdan: Definitely. I love the lyrics and the rhythm of a good song. Occasionally, I’ll get into some karaoke just for the fun of it—there’s nothing wrong with a little self-entertainment!

Tribune: You are well-known for your guitar skills. How many guitars do you currently have in your collection?

Snowdan: At the moment, I have 20 guitars in my personal collection. I actually had many more, but I’ve donated several to others and to churches over the years.

Tribune: Besides the guitar, are there other instruments you play?

Snowdan: While the guitar is my primary instrument, I also play the bass, drums, keyboard, piano, ukulele and the Sape. I suppose I’m quite fortunate to be gifted with the ability to pick up various instruments, but the guitar will always be my “major.”

Tribune: Are you active in sports as well?

Snowdan: Not only music — I was also involved in go-kart and jet ski racing before becoming a people’s representative. Me and my brother competed internationally in Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Brunei. I even obtained an international go-kart racing licence.

Tribune: What are some of your favourite food?

Snowdan: There are quite a lot, so it is difficult to choose. Among my favourites are ayam pansuh, curry, nasi lemak and Sarawak laksa. Actually, I enjoy many types of food because I simply love eating.
