KUCHING: A total of 150 secondary students from 15 schools across Sarawak will take part in the 14th Toastmasters International Youth Communication Camp (YCC) in Sematan from Aug 29 to 31.
The programme, organised by Kuching Toastmasters Club (KTMC) at Kem Putra Sentosa, will focus on public speaking, leadership, team building and talent development through practical and interactive activities.
Toastmasters International Division D Director and Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Liu San Liang said this year’s camp would also feature local and international facilitators who would provide hands-on mentorship to participants.
“This year’s event features 150 students from 15 schools across Sarawak.
“It also has a global touch, drawing local volunteers alongside international facilitators from Kuching and around the world to deliver hands-on, practical mentorship,” he said in a statement.
Liu said the students would undergo intensive training covering speech writing, presentation techniques, body language, grammar and English language enhancement.
Initiated in 2012, the YCC focuses on three main areas: public speaking, leadership and team bonding, as well as talent showcasing.
The programme adopts a facilitator-led, participant-centred approach, allowing students to develop communication skills through practical participation and experience.
Meanwhile, YCC organising chairman Sahil Dev said the programme was designed to develop more than just students’ ability to speak confidently.
“Communication is more than just speaking; it is about building bridges, nurturing cultural pride, and instilling the courage to express impactful ideas.
“Beyond core classroom instruction, the campers will participate in various activities to foster collaboration, teamwork and mutual trust,” he said.
Sahil said the programme would culminate on Aug 31 with its signature “Lend Me Your Ears” Grand Finale, featuring a speech contest involving selected finalists.
“The selected finalists will showcase their speaking abilities and unique talents before a panel of distinguished judges,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of financial support received from various parties in ensuring students from different socioeconomic backgrounds could participate in the programme.
“Their collective commitment and generous financial grants allow us to heavily subsidise the actual overhead cost per camper, ensuring this transformative education remains accessible to deserving students from all socioeconomic backgrounds,” he said.
Sahil expressed appreciation to Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the programme’s patron, for his continued support and guidance.
He also thanked Deputy Transport Minister II Datuk Henry Harry Jinep for supporting the participation of students from Bau.
The programme is also supported by Mitsubishi Corporation, Nova Fusion Sdn Bhd, Tamworth Rotary Club of Australia, participating schools and parent-teacher associations.
