KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) described the newly launched Miri–Marudi, Marudi–Mulu (Kuala Melinau) and Long Panai–Long Lama (MMMLL road) project as a significant milestone in the Sarawak government’s efforts to improve connectivity and uplift rural communities.

SUHAKAM said the initiative announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and launched on Nov 15 would transform former logging roads into fully accessible public routes by 2030, opening up long-awaited social and economic opportunities in the northern region.

It said the upgraded road network is expected to enhance mobility, stimulate commercial activities and strengthen links between remote settlements and the rest of the state.

“Many marginalised and deep-rural communities continue to face longstanding challenges in accessing essential services, economic participation and basic infrastructure.

“Improved and sustainable connectivity is therefore crucial to advancing their inclusion in the state’s long-term development plans,” it said in a statement.

SUHAKAM also welcomed the Premier’s recent pledge to close the rural-urban development gap by 2030, noting that no community should be left behind in terms of access to facilities, clean water and electricity.

It expressed hope that the MMMLL road project will be implemented in a sustainable, equitable and inclusive manner to ensure the benefits reach all communities, particularly those historically underserved.

SUHAKAM reaffirmed its readiness, through its Sarawak office, to support efforts aimed at upholding the rights and dignity of people living in remote and underserved areas.
