KUCHING: About 150 participants from surrounding areas in Sungai Apong Baru joined the three-kilometre 2026 Gawai Procession today (May 23) to celebrate unity and community spirit.
The procession began at Sungai Apong Baru Multipurpose Hall and featured colourful native costumes, traditional music, cultural performances and lively community participation.
Officiating at the event, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the celebration reflected the strong unity among the people of Kuching South despite their diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.
“It is truly wonderful to see Bumiputera, Malay, Chinese and many others walking together and celebrating Gawai Dayak as one community.
“Programmes like this are important because they bring neighbours together, strengthen friendships, and create understanding among the community,” he said in his speech at the event held in Sungai Apong Baru Multipurpose Hall here.

Wee added that MBKS would continue working closely with the community to improve the quality of life in Sungai Apong Baru and throughout Kuching South.
“We will continue improving public facilties, roads, drainage, lighting, parks and community spaces to ensure Sungai Apong Baru remains a clean, safe and comfortable place for everyone,” he added.
Apart from infrastructure development, he said MBKS would also continue supporting cultural programmes, youth activities, health campaigns and environmental awareness initiatives to strengthen community unity.
“A strong city is not built only with buildings and roads. A strong city is built with caring communities, mutual respect and unity among the people,” he said.
Wee also thanked the Dayak community for sharing their rich culture, traditions, music, food and hospitality with the wider community.
“May the spirit of Gawai continue to bring happiness, prosperity, good health, and stronger unity to all our communities. Selamat Hari Gawai Dayak. Gayu Guru, Gerai Nyamai,” he said.
