MATU: The construction of the Sungai Passin–Matu road project has reached 76.18 per cent physical progress, which is ahead of its original schedule.
Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development (Infrastructure Development) Datuk Aidel Lariwoo said the project’s current performance is encouraging and is expected to be completed earlier than planned.
“So far, progress has been very good and is ahead of schedule. This is a positive achievement,” he said during a working visit to inspect the project on Monday (April 27) as reported by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS).
Aidel said about 8km of the road alignment have been completed with road base works, while construction on the remaining sections is actively ongoing.
“The 17.6km project, with a total cost of RM77.8 million, is among key initiatives to strengthen rural connectivity, particularly in Matu and surrounding areas.”
He reassured that continuous monitoring will be carried out to ensure the project proceeds smoothly and is completed within the stipulated timeframe.
“We will continue to go to the ground to monitor progress even though the project is currently on track.”
Meanwhile, Daro assemblyman Dr Safiee Ahmad noted that communities involving seven longhouses in the area still rely fully on river transport.
He said the road construction will ease connectivity for residents while opening up opportunities for the implementation of the Rural Electricity Scheme (RES), which has already been approved.
“Once completed, the road will not only improve access for residents but also accelerate the implementation of various other development projects.”
At the same time, he advised the public not to use the road at this stage due to safety concerns, and expressed hope that the project will be fully completed ahead of schedule for the benefit of the local community.
