MIRI: The upgrading works at the Sungai Tujoh Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex are expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said key components of the project include the construction of additional booths for immigration and customs officers, road widening to accommodate four new lanes, and the provision of public toilet facilities.

“We want this project to be completed before the end of the year, so that by Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and Gawai next year, traffic congestion at this border checkpoint can be reduced,” he said.

He said this during a working visit to the ICQS Complex recently.

The Senadin Assemblyman stressed that the project is a Sarawak Government’s initiative in response to public complaints over severe congestion at the checkpoint, especially during festive seasons and weekends.

To ensure smooth implementation, Lee proposed the formation of a special task force comprising representatives from the Public Works Department (PWD), the Immigration Department, and the Customs Department.

The team would serve as a coordination platform and monitor progress on a regular basis.

As a temporary traffic management measure, he suggested that major construction works be carried out from Monday to Thursday to avoid disrupting traffic flow during the busier weekends.

At the same time, PWD has been instructed to review the project schedule and resolve technical issues promptly, including piling-related problems that have been identified as contributing to delays.

“I urge PWD and the contractor to step up their efforts and find ways to speed up implementation so that the project can be completed on time,” he added.
