SIBU: The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch today (June 17) delivered basic food items and daily essentials to victims of the Rh Gamang fire at Jalan Penasu.
Branch chairman Councillor Kevin Lau said he was alerted to the incident on Monday evening (June 16) by longhouse resident and fellow member Councillor Johnny Ganing.
“Upon receiving the news, my team and I immediately visited the scene to assess the situation.
“We hope this assistance will help ease their burden during this difficult time,” he said in a statement yesterday (June 17).
Lau shared that he had close ties with all nine families affected.
“Our focus now is on supporting them through the immediate aftermath. We’ll continue working closely with the Sibu Disaster Management Committee and Housing Development Corporation Sarawak to coordinate further aid,” he added.
He also thanked the District Office, Welfare Department, and emergency response agencies for their swift action, including relocating the victims to a temporary relief centre (PPS) at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tanjung Penasu.
On Monday evening, 38 longhouse residents were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs after a fire destroyed their nine-door longhouse at Jalan Penasu.
No casualties were recorded in the 6.56 pm incident.
