KUCHING: A network of smaller water treatment plants is being expanded across Samarahan to ease pressure on the Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant.

Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the additional facilities would support water supply to the rapidly developing Samarahan area.

“The plant currently channels about 45 MLD to Asajaya, Sadong Jaya, Sebuyau and Simunjan — excluding UiTM and Unimas, which draw from their own dedicated supply,” he said when met during a working visit to the Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant, here today (June 30).

Julaihi speaks to reporters, accompanied by Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.

Julaihi said a 3.2 MLD treatment plant in Sebuyau continues to serve the area, while a new 5 MLD plant in Sebangan is nearing completion and is expected to begin operations next month, providing additional support to the Batu Kitang network.

He said that another small-scale treatment system in Sebuyau is also being upgraded to produce an additional 5 MLD.

He added that a newly completed treatment plant in Puncak Borneo, with a capacity of 6 MLD and expandable to 8 MLD, is now supplying treated water to surrounding villages.

Julaihi also explained that water infrastructure projects differ from road construction, as every component of a water supply system must be completed before it can begin operating.

“A water system cannot function until every component — treatment, intake, piping, booster stations, and testing and commissioning — is fully completed, unlike half-finised roads,” he said.
