KUCHING: The late Datuk Seri Bo’ Tajang Laing’s legacy continues to shape generations of Orang Ulu leaders.

Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon described him as a trailblazer who opened doors for those from the interior.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Tajang Laing, a towering son of Sarawak and a true pioneer of the Orang Ulu community,” he said in a tribute.

Chukpai said Tajang, who served as Sarawak’s first Orang Ulu minister, broke barriers and gave confidence to many from upriver communities, including those in Murum and Belaga, that they too could rise and have a voice at the highest levels of government.

He said his legacy is deeply felt by the people of Murum and Belaga.

“He understood the realities of life in the interior: the challenges of connectivity, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. He championed development that reached beyond the towns into the heart of our rural communities,” he said.

Chukpai also recalled stories of Tajang’s tireless efforts to reach the people.

“I still remember being told how he travelled deep into the interior by river and rugged logging roads, often under difficult conditions just to meet the people, to listen, and to understand their struggles firsthand. That story has stayed with me.

“It reminded me that leadership is not about position, but about presence, not about being heard in the city, but about listening in the longhouses,” he said.

Chukpai said that same spirit continues to guide his service to the people of Murum and Belaga, stressing the importance of staying close to the ground and ensuring no community is left behind.

He also said Tajang’s contributions laid the foundation for continued rural development, including improvements in infrastructure, education access and a more inclusive growth agenda.

“More importantly, he carried the identity, dignity and aspirations of the Orang Ulu with pride. He reminded us that our heritage is not a limitation, but a strength,” he said.

Extending condolences on behalf of the people of Murum and the wider Belaga community, Chukpai said Tajang’s passing marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Sarawak’s history.

“From the rivers of Balui to the halls of leadership, his legacy flows on — guiding us to serve with courage, humility and purpose,” he said.
