KUCHING: The upgrading and repair works on the Pontoon Jetty at Esplanade Telaga Air have been completed, allowing the facility to resume operations for the surrounding community.

The Belian timber jetty in Kampung Telaga Air was officially handed over today by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), witnessed by representatives from the P193 Santubong Parliamentary Service Centre.

Santubong MP Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the project was implemented following complaints and field inspections which found the jetty to be in a dilapidated and hazardous condition.

“On Nov 16 last year, I visited the site to personally inspect the Pontoon Jetty at Esplanade Telaga Air, which had collapsed and posed risks to residents, especially children commuting to school.

“At that time, many complaints were received and we also saw the temporary wooden jetty being used in unsafe conditions.

“With the completion of this upgrading project, the jetty will not only benefit residents of Kampung Telaga Air, but will also be used by residents of Kampung Sungai Aur, Kampung Sibu Laut and Kampung Mersan,” she said in a Facebook post today (Apr 29).

She said the main users of the jetty include students, teachers and fishermen who rely on the facility as a daily transport link and for their livelihood.

Nancy also thanked all technical agencies involved, particularly the Sarawak DID and the contractor, for completing the project.

“Efforts to ensure better and safer facilities will continue to be a priority for the well-being of the people of Santubong,” she said.
