KUCHING: The Telaga Air Regatta 2025 is regarded as an event that could drive tourism growth in Sarawak, with the Telaga Air Zone emerging as a focus of the Southern Tourism Belt.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Hall and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said Telaga Air had undergone rapid transformation through the collaboration of the state government, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK).

“This joint effort has further enhanced Telaga Air’s appeal as one of Sarawak’s leading tourism destinations.

Abdul Rahman delivers his speech at the Telaga Air Regatta 2025 at the Telaga Air Esplanade.

“The biennial regatta is not only festive but also strengthens the local economy,” he said when officiating at the Telaga Air Regatta 2025 at the Telaga Air Esplanade today.

The Pantai Damai assemblyman added that Telaga Air is now recognised as an eco-tourism destination, offering scenic attractions such as Mount Serapi, Trombol Beach and nearby islands.

“Starting with the construction of an 800-metre waterfront in the early 2000s, followed by the esplanade and various community and entrepreneurial facilities, public infrastructure at Telaga Air has steadily improved.

“As a result, tourism activity here continues to rise, with more stalls, businesses and eateries attracting visitors to Telaga Air,” he added.

On the issue of traffic congestion, Abdul Rahman said the state government had approved the construction of two new routes, including a shortcut from the Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Highway (FAC Highway) to the Telaga Air Waterfront.

He said that a road from the FAC Highway to Trombol — the site of the new i-CATS University College campus — has also been proposed.

“These measures are crucial to ensure visitors have a more comfortable and convenient journey to Telaga Air, especially during weekends and festive seasons,” he said.

On the same note, he suggested that regatta events across Sarawak be coordinated on a fixed schedule, culminating in the Sarawak Regatta.

“The Telaga Air Regatta is unique as it is the only regatta in Sarawak featuring a five-kilometre marathon category. With proper planning, it could attract international tourists, as seen in neighbouring countries,” he added.
