MIRI: Police seized 10 motorcycles, arrested a 19-year-old rider and issued 35 summonses during overnight operations targeting illegal street racing and dangerous motorcycle offences across Miri.
The six-hour enforcement operations, led by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD Miri), was carried out between 10.30 pm on July 25 and 4.30 am on July 26.
Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operations focused on known street racing hotspots, including Miri city centre, Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Marina, Jalan Canada Hill, Jalan Piasau, Jalan Tudan and Jalan Pujut.
“The operations were conducted to curb illegal street racing activities that endanger road users, disrupt traffic flow and threaten public safety,” he said.
A total of 35 individuals, comprising 31 men and four women, together with 35 motorcycles, were inspected during the operation.
Police seized 10 motorcycles under Section 60(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for various traffic offences.
A 19-year-old local motorcyclist was also arrested under Section 108(3)(f) of the same Act for allegedly displaying a false vehicle registration number.
Among the offences detected were riding without a valid driving licence, illegal structural modifications to motorcycles, modified exhaust systems producing excessive noise, missing side mirrors, failure to display registration plates, the use of non compliant decorative number plates and other technical violations.
Farhan said police would continue to intensify enforcement against illegal street racing and reckless riding, warning that offenders would face firm action under the law.
“There will be no compromise against individuals who engage in illegal street racing or any activity that endangers their own lives and the safety of other road users. Such irresponsible behaviour has no place on our roads,” he said.
He urged motorists and motorcyclists to comply with road traffic laws, refrain from making unauthorised vehicle modifications and avoid activities that could jeopardise public safety or disturb public order.
Members of the public with information on illegal street racing or related offences are encouraged to contact IPD Miri or the nearest police station to assist enforcement efforts.
Police said sustained operations would continue to deter offenders and ensure safer roads for the community.
