KUCHING: Traditional Teochew opera and performing arts should continue to be preserved as they play an important role in strengthening cultural identity among younger generations, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said cultural traditions are important in fostering identity and unity among Sarawak’s diverse communities.

“On a personal note, I have long appreciated Teochew performing arts, particularly Teochew opera, which he had been exposed to since I was young.

“It remains something I find familiar and culturally enriching. I am encouraged to see that Teo Khiaw Club continues to promote traditional arts and nurture young talents through its orchestra and cultural activities,” he said.

He said in a text speech read out by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian during the Teo Khiaw Club’s 105th Anniversary Commemorative Gala Dinner at the UNIFOR Complex on Saturday (May 23).

“In today’s digital age, it is important that younger generations remain connected to their cultural heritage.

“Through music and traditional arts, they can develop creativity, discipline, emotional expression, and a stronger sense of identity,” added the Premier.

He also paid tribute to the early Teochew pioneers in Sarawak, saying their contributions extended beyond economic achievements.

“They also played significant roles in social development, cultural advancement, education, and charitable welfare, laying a strong foundation for the early development of Kuching society.

“This balance between economic progress and cultural continuity is one of the reasons why the Teochew community has remained vibrant across generations.

“It is also why Teo Khiaw Club has endured for more than a century and continues to thrive as a dynamic organisation today.

“This spirit reflects the values that Sarawak continues to uphold today—unity in diversity, mutual respect, and inclusiveness,” he said.

He also called on all communities to remain united, continue respecting one another and work together in building a brighter future for Sarawak.
