KUCHING: Thousands of visitors descended upon Padang Merdeka in Kuching on Saturday evening (March 14) for the fourth consecutive edition of ‘Juh Berambeh Sungkei @ Kuching 2026’.

The event was officiated by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Speaking at the event, Abdul Karim noted that attendance has grown steadily since the inaugural edition, with approximately 5,000 visitors expected this year – consistent with last year’s turnout.

He expressed confidence that the venue would be filled to capacity by the time of iftar, aided in part by favourable weather conditions in the evening.

“Since the first year, the numbers have grown larger and larger. It involves not only those who wish to break their fast, but also a great many people from various other ethnic communities, and particularly university students,” he said to the press during an interview.

The event has been praised for its inclusive character, drawing participants from diverse ethnic backgrounds alongside the Muslim community observing the Ramadan fast.

Notably, large numbers of university students from Samarahan have made their way to Kuching to take part in the festivities, reflecting the event’s growing appeal among the youth.

‘Juh Berambeh Sungkei’ has expanded beyond Kuching in recent years, with similar events having been held in Sibu, Miri and Samarahan.

Abdul Karim indicated that next year’s edition is expected to be even more vibrant, given the enthusiastic public reception the event has consistently received across the state.
