A healthy digestive system is important for your overall wellbeing. It helps your body break down food, absorb nutrients and get rid of waste. When your digestion is working well, you are more likely to feel energetic and comfortable.

Eat a balanced diet:

Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans in your meals. These foods are rich in fibre, which helps food move through the digestive tract and prevents constipation. Try to limit processed foods, sugary snacks and fried foods, as they can be harder to digest.

Drink enough water:

Water helps your body digest food and softens stools, making them easier to pass. Aim to drink water regularly throughout the day, especially in hot weather or after physical activity. If you often forget to drink water, carry a reusable bottle with you as a reminder.

Eat slowly:

Chew your food well before swallowing. This gives your stomach less work to do and helps your body absorb nutrients more effectively. Avoid overeating by stopping when you feel comfortably full rather than stuffed.

Regular exercise supports good digestion:

Activities such as walking, cycling, swimming or even light stretching can help food move through your digestive system. Try to be active for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week.

Stress can affect your stomach:

Many people experience stomach discomfort or changes in bowel habits during stressful times. Find healthy ways to relax, such as deep breathing, reading, listening to music or spending time with family and friends. Getting enough sleep also helps your body function properly, including your digestive system.

Pay attention to foods that may upset your stomach:

Some people are sensitive to spicy foods, dairy products, fatty meals or caffeine. If you notice that certain foods regularly cause discomfort, try reducing them or speak to a healthcare professional for advice.

Don’t ignore ongoing digestive problems:

If you have severe stomach pain, frequent heartburn, blood in your stool or unexplained weight loss, seek medical attention. Early treatment can prevent more serious health issues.
