KUCHING: The plan to implement separate zoning for alcohol and non-alcohol dining areas at Topspot Food Court will be put on hold and retracted, following public concerns.

Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and its subsidiary, SEDC Permata Sdn Bhd said they acknowledged the recent concerns by the public regarding the zoning arrangement at the eatery located on Level 6 of Urban Transformation Centre (UTC).

“Considering these discussions, the management has decided to put the notice on hold.

“We will retract the notice and conduct further engagements with the relevant parties to ensure that any final decision takes into account the best interests of everyone.

“Any updates on this matter will be communicated transparently to the public,” it said in a statement to clarify the purpose and background of the zoning system.

SEDC then said it had received a proposal from Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) recommending the establishment of separate zoning for alcohol and non-alcohol dining areas in November last year.

“Following further discussions with our tenants, an agreement was reached and finalised in December 2024. This initiative forms part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the dining experience for all patrons by ensuring that the space accommodates diverse preferences.

“As a result, the Topspot Food Court Management introduced a zoning arrangement that divides the foodcourt into two distinct areas namely alcohol-free zone and a general dining zone,” it said.

It further explained that the alcohol-free zone is designated for customers who prefer a dining environment without alcohol, while the general dining zone caters to those who wish to enjoy a broader selection of beverage options in a designated area.

“This structured approach aims to balance the needs of various patrons while maintaining the unique character of Topspot Food Court as one of Kuching most popular dining destinations,” it said.

It said SEDC Permata Sdn Bhd also remained committed to continuously improving the facilities and ensuring that Topspot Food Court remains a welcoming space for all.

“We highly value community feedback and remain open to discussions on ways to further enhance the overall experience at our establishments,” it said.
