BINTULU: The Bintulu constituency has the potential to emerge as a unique cultural tourism destination through Gawai-linked activities that celebrate Sarawak’s heritage and unity.
Infrastructure and Port Development Deputy Minister, Datuk Majang Renggi, said Bintulu’s cultural diversity should be leveraged to attract tourists.
He noted that traditional events like the ‘Ngerandang Jalai’ parade could help raise Bintulu’s profile and generate economic spillovers during festive seasons.
“With its mix of Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Melayu, Kayan, Kenyah and others, Bintulu reflects the very essence of Sarawak’s rich identity.
“Such programmes not only highlight heritage but also support local entrepreneurs, homestay operators and artisans to earn extra income.
“Cultural tourism could complement development without compromising local traditions,” he said at the ‘Ngerandang Jalai Gawai Dayak Bintulu 2025’ event recently.
The parade involved 1,200 participants from government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community leaders and the public, marching around Bintulu town in traditional attire.
The term ‘ngerandang jalai’ in Iban refers to preparing for something greater, which in this context symbolises the upcoming Gawai Dayak celebration.
The Samalaju assemblyman added that the programme also reflects shared values such as mutual respect, cooperation, and harmony that go beyond ethnic lines.
“Our unity is our strength. These traditions remind us that differences are not barriers, but part of our shared Sarawakian spirit,” he said.
Majang also reminded the public to drive safely when returning to their hometowns for the celebration and wished all a joyful Gawai.
