KUCHING: Tourists are attracted by Sarawak’s uniqueness which is rich in culture and diversity.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said Sarawak’s peaceful and harmonious atmosphere was the main attraction for tourists, and therefore that spirit of togetherness among the people must be preserved.

“This is the uniqueness of Sarawak. Like today (yesterday) we celebrate Chinese New Year, but it is not only celebrated by the Chinese but also the other races,” he told reporters during the Chinese New Year open house at Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) chief Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian’s house, yesterday.

He noted tourists from Australia, United Kingdom and China normally visited Sarawak during the Chinese New Year.

“Travelling abroad during Chinese New Year has been a trend now,” he said.

Lee said tourists wanted to experience how Chinese New Year was celebrated in other countries.

“Hopefully when the state has its own airline company, we will soon have an increased number of tourist arrivals,” he said.

He said problem now was that there was no direct connectivity from other regions to Kuching.
