KUCHING: Receiving the ‘Tuai Adat’ title is a unique encouragement distinct from government honours as it directly recognises Iban cultural contributions, said Datuk Seri Edmund Langgu.
Expressing his gratitude during his acceptance speech, the prominent Iban community leader from Saratok noted that the recognition serves as a vital boost for those preserving traditional heritage.
“It differs from the medals awarded by the government, whereby Iban contributions to cultural activities were given due recognition, which would be a great form of encouragement to us,” he said.
The title was conferred on him by the Tun Jugah Foundation (TJF) during a special investiture ceremony held on July 24, which brought together some 100 social-cultural activists, academics and NGO representatives.
Explaining the rationale behind the honour, TJF Chairman, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Leonard Linggi Jugah, stated that Langgu was selected for his lifelong dedication to practising, promoting and sustaining Iban cultural traditions.
Living in a rural longhouse, Langgu remains adept in traditional community practices, including rice cultivation, hunting, fishing, and customary social lifestyle knowledge passed down from community elders.
His involvement in safeguarding Iban heritage is well-established. Foundation records show his direct role as an adviser for the ‘Bup Sereba Reti Jaku Iban’ dictionary project, alongside his active participation in various language and custom initiatives, including delivering a lecture on West Kalimantan Ibanic language in 2002.
According to TJF, the title ‘Tuai Adat’ was carefully derived from traditional Iban leadership designations such as Tuai Burung (augur), Tuai Kayau (war leader), Tuai Gawai (festival elder), and Tuai Pemesai (prominent leader) – all of which embody figures who protect and guide the community.
