KUCHING: Two local men lost their lives in a fatal collision between a motorcycle and a sports utility vehicle (SUV) along Jalan Astana here, late last night (Mar 12).

Kuching police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the accident happened at around 11 pm when the victims’ motorcycle collided with the SUV that was turning into Lorong 5, Jalan Astana.

“As a result, the 31-year-old pillion rider was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, while the 32-year-old rider succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) emergency unit.

“The SUV driver escaped unscathed but he is being detained to facilitate investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving,” he said in a statement.

Upon conviction, the offence carries a prison term of up to 10 years and a fine of up to RM50,000.

Mohd Farhan urged anyone with information on the accident to contact traffic investigation officer ASP Lucas Apin at 013-8246881, 082-259900, or visit the nearest police station.

He also reminded road users to drive prudently and adhere to traffic laws to prevent accidents.
