MIRI: Ten underprivileged students from Curtin University Malaysia have received brand-new laptops from the Sarawak Unity Education Fund.
The laptops, all Dell models, were handed over during a simple ceremony on Monday, officiated by Sarawak’s Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, who also serves as Chair of the Curtin Malaysia Sarawak Management Committee.
In his speech, Lee expressed his gratitude to the Sarawak Unity Education Fund for its dedication to empowering students.
“The presentation of these 10 brand-new laptops is a testament to their commitment to nurturing the youth of Sarawak,” he said.
He also acknowledged Datuk Richard Lee Say Tshin, Chairman of the Fund, for his leadership in making the initiative possible.
Lee highlighted the significance of the programme, which specifically supports students facing financial hardship.
“These laptops will not only aid in their studies but also equip them with the necessary skills to thrive in the digital economy and green technology sectors — both of which are crucial for Sarawak’s future.”
The Sarawak Unity Education Fund, established nearly two years ago, has rapidly gained momentum.
This laptop donation marks its first major initiative, demonstrating its commitment to advancing education in the state.
To date, the Fund has raised RM3.6 million, pledging to provide scholarships and financial aid to deserving students regardless of race, provided they meet university admission criteria.
Acknowledging another key contributor, Lee extended his appreciation to the Medical Awareness Camp Outreach (MACO), a national non-governmental organisation that donated the laptops.
“MACO has been a beacon of hope for students across Malaysia, having donated over 7,000 laptops to more than 300 schools nationwide. Their dedication to education and community support is truly inspiring,” he said.
Also present at the ceremony was Professor Vincent Lee, Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor, President, and Chief Executive of Curtin University Malaysia.
