KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) graduates have been urged to take an active role in Sarawak’s transformation into a developed and sustainable region by 2030.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the world is undergoing profound economic and technological changes, and Sarawak needs a generation capable of driving innovation, integrity, and resilience to sustain its development momentum.
“You are the generation that will define Sarawak’s place in this new world through innovation, creativity and courage,” he said during his address at the university’s 29th Convocation Ceremony at Arena Gemilang, Detar Putra, here today (Nov 5).
Uggah also mentioned that education plays a central role in supporting the state’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 by cultivating the knowledge, skills and values needed for an inclusive society.
He emphasised that UNIMAS carries both a moral and strategic mandate to uphold education with social impact and to align research and innovation with Sarawak’s regional development agenda.
“Our mission is to harmonise AI and green industry, knowledge and humanity – ensuring that the benefits of innovation reach every corner of Sarawak, from the smallest village to the largest city,” he said.
The Deputy Premier added that through collaboration with Sarawak Skills and CENTEXS, the state is preparing young talents for 200,000 high-value jobs by 2030, supporting sectors such as green energy, digital technology and advanced manufacturing.
He also waxed lyrical about UNIMAS lecturers and staff for their dedication in nurturing graduates who embody Sarawak’s values of service, resilience and curiosity.
“The Sarawak you are entering is confident, ambitious and open to talent.
“You graduate at a time of great momentum. Use this moment to help shape the Sarawak of 2030 and beyond,” he told the graduates.
