KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) views the reform of the higher education legal framework as an important step in ensuring the national higher education system remains relevant, dynamic and future-ready.
The university said it took note of developments concerning the proposed repeal of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (AUKU) and welcomes the efforts by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) to develop a new and more comprehensive legal framework for higher education
The efforts are outlined in the Malaysia Higher Education Plan (RPTM) 2026 to 2035, including the agenda for establishing the One Higher Education Act (OHEA).
“UNIMAS further believed the reform process should balance and maintain continuity between institutional autonomy, academic freedom and student voice,” it said in a statement by UNIMAS yesterday (Aug. 15).
At the same time, UNIMAS said governance, accountability and excellence in the national higher education system must continue to be strengthened and upheld.
As a public higher education institution in Sarawak, UNIMAS stands ready to cooperate and contribute its perspectives and expertise, drawing on the university’s institutional experience in education, skills, research, innovation and university governance.
“The contributions will particularly relate to higher education and Sarawak’s development needs as part of the stakeholder engagement process to be undertaken by MOHE,” it said.
