KUCHING: Sarawak has advanced its digital transformation agenda with the launch of the Sarawak Data Governance Framework (SDGF) to support the development of trusted artificial intelligence (AI).

Deputy State Secretary (Operations) Datuk Hii Chang Kee said the state’s leadership, under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has consistently emphasised that effective data governance is key to unlocking the full potential of AI in the public sector.

“The launch of the SDGF today marks Sarawak’s important preparedness towards the development of trusted AI because, without robust data governance, AI will not be able to deliver its full value and benefits,” he said.

He was speaking at the launch of the Sarawak Data Governance Framework (SDGF) 2026, officiated by State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki at a hotel here.

Hii said the framework was developed through close collaboration between the Sarawak Civil Service Digitalisation Unit (SCSDU), Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), Sarawak AI Centre (SAIC) and Sarawak Information Systems (SAINS) to establish a comprehensive data governance ecosystem.

He stressed that strong data governance is a fundamental requirement for AI development, enabling the technology to deliver meaningful benefits to both the government and the people.

He added that the state’s digital initiatives reflect a clear commitment to future-proofing the Sarawak civil service (SCS), ensuring it remains competitive, resilient and ready to meet the demands of the digital era.
