MATU: Members of the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) have been reminded to always uphold the good name and image of the organisation.

Sarawak Rela director Deputy Commissioner Rini Tupong said Rela was the third line of defence in the country, after the security forces and police.

He added that they were also the eyes and ears of the government and authorities.

“They help provide important information on certain matters, including crime and other unhealthy activities, to the authorities,” he said at a gathering with members from Matu, Daro, Dalat and Mukah, here recently.

Rini, who is due to retire next month, said Rela was the pillar of harmony, security and community wellbeing at village level because of their role and contribution to society.

He advised members to maintain their discipline, be vigilant at all times, and serve with dedication.

At the event, he also presented certificates of appreciation to 95 members and other individuals involved in patrol duties during the Independence Month celebration here recently.

Also present were Matu Rela officer Armi Jubir, Matu assistant district officer Zaraina Sahari and Matu police chief Sgt-Maj Hasnol Jonet.
