SIBU: All express bus drivers in Sarawak will be required to undergo urine screening throughout ‘Ops Krismas’, which runs from Dec 19 to 28.
Sarawak Road Transport Department (RTD) director Norizan Jili said the move aimed to ensure bus drivers were fit to drive and free from the influence of drugs while operating public transport services.
“Any driver who tests positive will be immediately replaced by the bus operator and barred from continuing the journey,” he said.
He said this during the launch of ‘Ops Khas Krismas’ at the Sibu Bus Terminal here last night (Dec 19), which was also attended by RTD senior enforcement director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan and Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili.
The operation, carried out in collaboration with the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), also involves inspections at major bus terminals in Kuching, Sibu and Miri.
Norizan said enforcement teams were focusing on vehicle safety aspects, including braking systems and tyre conditions, before buses were allowed to depart.
He added that passengers were encouraged to report dangerous driving behaviour such as speeding or mobile phone use.
“Firm action will be taken against drivers or passengers who fail to comply with safety regulations.
“This measure is part of our efforts to ensure that every bus journey is safe, so that passengers can enjoy the festive season with peace of mind,” he said.
